AMZN on Thursday reported a third-quarter loss of $274 million, or 60 cents a share, on revenue of $13.81 billion, compared with earnings of $63 million, or 14 cents a share, on $10.9 billion in sales in the same period a year ago. Excluding 37 cents a share related to losses from its investment in LivingSocial, Amazon would have lost 23 cents a share.
Analysts surveyed by FactSet had forecast Amazon to lose 7 cents a share on $13.9 billion in sales. Amazon also reported an operating loss of $28 million, after earlier forecast a loss of between $50 million and $350 million. For its fourth quarter, Amazon expects to report revenue of between $20.25 billion and $22.75 billion, while analysts had forecast sales of $22.8 billion. Amazon's shares fell as much as 9% in after-hours trading.
