Stocks turned in a rough session as investors digested disappointing economic data and unhealthy signs from European banks.
More people than expected filed applications for jobless benefits last week, indicating the U.S. labor market remains weak two years into the recovery. The Labor Department reported initial jobless claims rose by 9,000 to a seasonally adjusted 408,000 in the week ended Aug. 13, surpassing the 400,000 claims expected by economists. Any figure above 400,000 weekly claims usually indicates the economy is shedding more jobs than it is adding.
The Labor Department also released data showing inflation accelerated in July as food and gasoline became more expensive. In the largest monthly increase since March, consumer prices rose a seasonally adjusted 0.5% from June, following a 0.2% decline from May to June. The latest figure exceeded the 0.3% rise in overall prices that economists had forecast.
Further economic data showed August manufacturing activity declined sharply in the Philadelphia region. The Philadelphia Federal Reserve's business condition index fell to the lowest level since March 2009, down to negative 30.7 in August from 3.2 in July. Economists had predicted a small decline to 0.5.
Meanwhile, sales of existing U.S. homes fell 3.5% in July to an eight-month low, showing the housing market's inability to pull the economy forward. The National Association of Realtors reported sales fell to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.67 million, worse than the 4.99 million annual rate predicted by economists.
At market close, the Dow was off 3.7%, the S&P 500 was 4.5% lower, and the Nasdaq dropped 5.2%.作者: 黄道吉日 时间: 2011-8-19 00:40
