PRECIOUS METALS SOAR ON WEAK DOLLAR -- GOLD HITS NEW RECORD AND FOLLOWS SILVER HIGHER -- PRECIOUS METAL STOCKS FOLLOW THE METALS UP -- NEW STOCK BREAKOUTS INCLUDE GOLDCORP AND SILVER STANDARD RESOURCES -- FED POLICY SHOULD KEEP THE PRECIOUS METAL UPTREND GOING

GOLD HITS NEW RECORD ... Gold prices are surging to new record high today which is erasing the short-term setback of a couple of weeks ago. Chart 1 shows the Gold Trust Shares (GLD) breaking decisively through its late 2010 highs on rising volume. And, as usual, silver is leading it higher. The line on top of Chart 1 shows Silver iShares (SLV) trading at a new 31-year high. The relative strength ratio below the chart shows silver leading gold higher for months. Since silver is an industrial as well as a precious metal, its superior performance over gold is not only positive for bullion, but a positive sign for the economy and stock market. The same is true for their related stocks. Chart 2 shows the Market Vectors Gold Miners ETF (GDX) surging nearly 5% to the highest level in four months. Volume is also rising. The line on top of Chart 2 shows the Silver Miners ETF (SIL) having already reached a new high. The RS line below Chart 2 shows silver stocks outperforming those tied to gold.

RECENT BREAKOUTS ... Several silver stocks at or near new highs including Coeur d'Alene, Silvercorp, and Silver Wheaton. The first two are hitting new highs today and the third one is very close. My March 24 message suggested that Silver Standard Resources (SSRI) might be the next silver breakout. Chart 3 shows that silver stock having broken out to a new three-year high. I also listed a number of leading gold stocks at or near new highs including IAMGOLD, Gammon Gold, Harmony Gold, and New Gold. I suggested that Goldcorp be the next gold breakout. The daily bars in Chart 4 show Goldcorp having done just that. Even more impressive is the weekly bars in Chart 5 which show Goldcorp challenging its 2008 record high near 52. The flood of money pouring into precious metals is due to a continuing drop in the US Dollar and continued strength in foreign currencies. That's due mainly to foreign rate increases to combat inflation and expectations for a rate hike in Europe later this week. Meanwhile, our Fed is sticking to a zero rate policy which should keep the dollar on the defensive. As long as it continues to do that, precious metals will continue to attract new money. What better way to protect oneself against a devaluing currency?
