With no end in sight to the nuclear crisis in Japan in the wake of the recent massive earthquake, the U.S. military is preparing to ramp up its involvement — if needed — to halt the flow of deadly radiation from a damaged nuclear plant.

U.S. military operations currently are focused on humanitarian assistance, but American forces stand ready to respond more directly to the nuclear plant disaster if Japanese authorities appear unable to cover the nuclear cores themselves, a top Navy official said.

“I think the worst-case scenario …would be a situation where the recovery effort … to keep the cores covered on these reactors would ever be abandoned,” said Adm. Robert Willard, the chief of U.S. Pacific Command.
